Miracle on Ice was a single game event in which Team USA beat Team USSR in round robin play by a (4 to 3) score and where Play by Play announcer Al Michaels coined the famous phrase at the conclusion of the game “Do you believe in Miracles! Yes.”
After this win Team USA went on to beat Finland by a score of (4 to 2) and won the gold medal. Voted by Sports Illustrated as the greatest sports moment in the twentieth century.
On February 22, 1980 the phrase “Miracle on Ice” was coined when Team USA beat the heavily favored Team USSR at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Team USA went on to win the gold medal; the USSR won the silver medal, and Sweden the bronze.
This team was made up of collegiate and amateur players which was in complete contrast to Team USSR’s pro style players which played together for years. The “Miracle on Ice” is regarded as one of the greatest moments in American sports.
